Come Follow Me 27: 1 Kings 17-19
Come Follow Me Lesson 17: 1 Kings 17-19
Introduction
“If the Lord Be God, Follow Him”
When you
read the scriptures, you are exercising faith, which prepares your heart and
mind to hear the “still small voice” of the Spirit (1 Kings 19:12).
How can we keep our own lives connected with the Lord and our homes
dedicated to Him? How can we keep the covenant effective and valuable in our
lives?
How does the condition of our Country parallel the condition of the
House of Israel and the House of Judah at this time? How does spiritual
stability keep you grounded? Why is it important to have strong leadership that
values spiritual stability?
What happens when leadership violates covenants and/or commandments
from God?
What happened in the Northern Kingdom? What did King Ahab encourage the
people to do? (worship false god Baal.)
Owing to the influence of Ahab and Jezebel, the people had almost
entirely forsaken the worship of Jehovah and had become worshippers of the
Phoenician god Baal.
Elijah was sent to an extremely apostate group of people, just like
Abinidi was. How can personal faith in the Lord can thrive among the righteous
even in a wicked environment? What powerful miraculous demonstration was shown
to this group of people? (Fire falling from heaven) Remember He also works quiet, private miracles, like
meeting the personal needs of a faithful widow and her son.
How have you witness the Lord’s miracles in your own life? How has the still, small voice spoken to you? 1 Kings 19:12 Do we need earth shaking experiences to know we’ve received a miracle from God?

Elijah
seals the heavens and is fed by the ravens—At his command the barrel of flour
and the jar of oil of the widow of Zarephath never become empty—He raises her
son from death.
Vs 10-16 Do I have
faith to recognize and follow the words of a prophet and be blessed for
obeying? You'd better, Heidi. Your spiritual and physical safety depends upon it.
Vs 19-24 God heard the
blessing and prayers of Elijah, and He restored life to the widow's son.

“If the Lord be God,
follow him.”
The Israelites desperately needed rain, so they
turned to Baal, the supposed god of rain; after all King Ahab and Jezebel
endorsed him. In doing so they broke the first commandment of the ten: Thou
shalt have no other gods before me. (Exodus 20:3 That doesn’t mean you can have them as long as you
acknowledge god first; it means no other ever in His sight.)
Are you ever
distracted from following the True and Living God, because some philosophy or
practice the world adheres to seems more compelling?
1 Kings 18:21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word.
Look for how Elijah demonstrated faith in the Lord. What experiences have you had in your life that have increased your faith and taught you truth?

Elijah is
sent to meet Ahab—Obadiah saves a hundred prophets and meets Elijah—Elijah
challenges the prophets of Baal to call down fire from heaven—They fail—He
calls down fire, slays the prophets of Baal, and opens the heavens for rain.
Vs 17-18 Ahab forsook
the covenant of the Lord; Jezebel had prophets killed. Obadiah hid 100
prophets, righteous men who taught the gospel. And when Elijah showed up, Ahab
had the nerve to blame Elijah for the state of Israel.
Vs 21 If you believe in
God hearken to Him. If you believe in His Son Jesus Christ, follow Him.
Vs 30-39 God showed the
people He is the Only True God and that He had chosen Elijah as his prophet.
The people knew that they had been worshiping false gods.
Personal Study: 1 Kings 19
The Lord often speaks in
quiet, simple ways.

so that we can hear God?

thought it takes to put these impressions into words can help you ponder and
