Come Follow Me: Thoughts to Keep in Mind: The Historical Books
(between 21 and 22)
The historical books tell a story: Joshua through Esther.
The perspective of
the children of Israel, God’s covenant people is found in their faith in the
Lord. They saw His hand in their lives and His intervention in the affairs of
their nation. This spiritual perspective is part of what makes the Old
Testament historical books so valuable to those who are seeking to build their
own faith in God.
Context with which we
can weigh and value our scripture reading: How does it fit in God’s plan of
salvation? How does it fit with what you know about the nature of Heavenly
Father and Jesus Christ? How does it fit with revealed truths in other
scriptures or with the teachings of living prophets? And how does it fit with
the whisperings of the Spirit to your own heart and mind?
Some truths were lost from our current Bible; some truths were purposefully
taken out; and some truths that are in the brass plates may never have been in
the Bible, because they were written by different tribes and different prophets.
The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ serves as another witness
to the truth of the Bible and restores to us many of the truths that have been
taken out, and clarifies others, too. (1 Nephi 13:28; see also verses 29, 40}
Gems of truth abound in the historical books of the Old Testament. The best things recorded in the Old Testament point to our Savior and how we can have faith in Him and come unto Him. These accounts tell of the covenant people of God—men and women who had human weaknesses and yet loved and served the Lord. We have way more in common with them and their history than we may think; and these books have been preserved for us so that we can learn from them and so that we can know more about our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ because of the experiences they have shared with us.
