Come Follow Me: Thoughts to Keep in Mind: The Tabernacle and Sacrifice

Introduction:

The Tabernacle was a portable temple.

Temples are places of worship and sacrifice; but today, we don’t offer animal sacrifice. That ended with the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

There is much symbolism connected with temple worship, ancient and modern.

The animal sacrifice pointed to the life and mission and sacrifice of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (see Alma 25:16; Jacob 4:5; Jarom 1:11).

How does the Tabernacle (and the temple today) point to and strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ?

Exodus 25:8 It provided a place for Jesus to dwell with His people.

Vs 10-22 The Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant inside the Holy of Holies represented God’s presence among His people.

Once a year, on a day called the Day of Atonement, the high priest would offer sacrifices on behalf of the people before entering alone into the tabernacle.

The high priest would symbolically make an atonement for the people one day a year, in similitude of the Sacrifice of the Only Begotten Son.

Like the high priest, Jesus Christ is the Mediator between us and God the Father. He passed through the veil to make intercession for us by virtue of the blood of His own sacrifice.

Hebrews 8–10 Jesus is the Mediator of a better covenant.

We go through similar steps before we enter the Celestial room, as the high priest in Moses’s day before he entered the Holy of Holies.

Jesus Christ, our “high priest of good things to come” (Hebrews 9:11), so that we can approach the throne of grace and obtain mercy (see Hebrews 4:1).

“Today, the purpose of temples is more than obtaining exaltation for ourselves. After receiving our own ordinances, we can stand in the place of our ancestors, vicariously receiving ordinances in their behalf. In a sense, we can become something like the ancient high priest—and the Great High Priest—opening the way to God’s presence for others.”

We are ordained to become Priest and Priestesses to the Most High God. We are also endowed with power. What power? Power to do His work and accomplish His design to bring salvation and exaltation to all His children who will believe on His name.

How Can the Sacrifices that I Make Strengthen My Faith in Jesus Christ?

Adam and Eve offered sacrifice in similitude of God’s offering of His Son. They learned and lived the gospel and rejoiced in their salvation through Jesus Christ (see Moses 5:4–12; Genesis 4:4).

On Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, the High Priest would symbolically kill a goat as a sacrifice for the people. He would also “bless” a goat to transfer all the sins of the people to the goat and then drive it away.

Because Jesus ended Sacrifice by the shedding of blood with His own atonement, He has asked us to offer up a broken heart and a contrite spirit.

What has Jesus done for you to bring you back into your Father’s presence?

What will you do for Him?

Isaiah 53:4, 6  Mosiah 15:8–9 Alma 34:10 3 Nephi 9:19–20

Do your part, and give Him your heart.
