Come Follow Me Lesson 15: Exodus 14-17

Introduction:

How are you doing at keeping a record? Do you follow the Spirit in what to record and what to share?

How do you feel knowing that the Lord is willing to fight for you? Do you believe it? Do you stand still and allow it.

The Israelites thought they were free, but then they thought it would all end at the Red Sea. It did not. Do you trust the Lord to remove obstacles in your path? Do you listen to what the Spirit tells you to do?

Exodus 14:13–14
13 ¶ And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

14 The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

What does it mean to hold your peace? What does it mean to fear not and stand still?

This story of deliverance at the Red Sea has been recounted numerous times to bolster the faith of those who needed faith. How does remembering the deliverance of ancient Israel give your courage and hope?

God Has Power to Deliver Me: Exodus 14

1-10

Have you ever felt trapped? (The Israelites had the Red Sea in front of them and the armies of Pharaoh behind them. They couldn’t see a way out. But remember the Lord is the Way!)

See Exodus 14:10 The Israelites were sore afraid when they saw the Egyptian armies closing in on them.

What fears do you have? Do you feel pursued by enemies, by debts, by lose of freedoms, by your own insecurities? Do you ever feel like you will either be beaten down or drowned?

11-12 Murmuring and lack of faith go together

13-31

How does God provide deliverance for us in our lives? How have you experienced his mercy and deliverance in your own life?

Vs 14 Put your trust in the Lord. He fights for those who keep covenants with Him.

Vs 15 Go forward in faith

vs 16 God’s prophets will show us which way to go; the Lord will provide the way; nothing is too difficult for our God.

Vs 18 Our enemies will know that Jesus Christ is the Lord; they’ll understand when they see Him deliver us with a mighty hand

vs 19-20 The Lord will lighten our path and darken the path of our enemies

vs 21 God can miraculously create a path in any circumstance for our salvation

vs 22 Just like the Israelites were given light and the Egyptians darkness; the walls of the sea were a protection for Israel and not for Egypt

vs 25 The Lord will warn our enemies and give them a chance to retreat and/or repent before the destruction that will follow if they don’t.

Vs 26-28 The walls of the sea closed upon the Egyptian armies and they all were drowned

vs 29 Israel came through on dry ground; sea stayed separated into walls for them!
Vs 30 God saved Israel that day. The Israelites saw the Egyptians dead upon the seashore.

Vs 31 They all witnessed this great miracle; they feared and believed the Lord; and His servant Moses

Moses knew what to do by the Spirit of Revelation. (See Doctrine and Covenants 8:2–3 )

How have we seen God’s power in our lives and the lives of our ancestors? (from Family Study)

Israel Sings Praises to the Lord for their Deliverance: Exodus 15:1-21 (Family Study Section)

The people truly rejoiced at their salvation and expressed wonder and confidence in the Lord.

Do we sing praises to Him for our blessings?

Vs 13 The Lord is with those who He has redeemed

vs 16 The Lord has purchased us with His own blood

vs 18 He will reign forever and ever

Can your family write a song to remember what great things the Lord has done for us?

How has the Lord Made Bitter Things Sweet in Your Life? How has this Increased Your Trust in Him Exodus 15:22-27

Again the Israelites murmured and complained. Would you do the same thing if all you had to drink was bitter water?

The Lord provided them with fresh water. The waters were made sweet.

Have bitter experienced been made sweet in your behalf? How did the Lord provide for that? What has He given to you personally to make your bitter cup sweet?

Vs 27 There next stopping place had 12 wells of water and 40 palm trees.

What good things do we have to look forward to?

Look at this wonderful promise in vs 26:

26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the Lord that healeth thee.

How is this a valuable promise to us as the House of Israel in this day?

Can we both murmur and diligently hearken to the voice of the Lord?

How Do You Trust in the Lord During Difficult times?

Why do people murmur? “And they did murmur because they knew not the dealings of that God who had created them.” (1 Nephi 2:11–12)

Hunger even caused Lehi to momentarily murmur. How does the hierarchy of our needs influence our ability to stay focused? Why can monthly fasting help us put things into perspective?

Do not judge ancient Israel, or your past serve, or even others around you because of murmuring. Life is not easy.

Do those things that will increase your faith and bring you happiness. Follow the commandments of God, so that you can have His Spirit with you. Seek understanding, knowledge, and wisdom through the Holy Spirit.

“Murmurers have short memories”, (Neal Maxwell). “Those with the shortest memories have the longest list of demands.” The Lord miraculously sent quail and water. “With no remembrance of past blessings, there is no perspective about what is really going on.”

Remember these 40 years the Lord has led thee in the wilderness:

1. to humble thee

2. to prove thee
3. to know what is in your heart
4. whether you’ll keep his commandments or not

Daily Spiritual Nourishment is Important: Exodus 16

The children of Israel needed fresh manna every day, and so do I.

How can our testimony become stale or full of worms if we don’t nourish it daily?

Jesus identifies Himself as the Bread of Life repeatedly. If we covenant with Him and partake of His flesh and blood in remembrance of Him, we will never die. The sacrament is important. Our commitment to follow the Lord is important. John 6:31–35, 48–58

Moses didn’t give the manna, God did. Manna gave physical nourishment; the Lord’s Spirit gives us spiritual nourishment.

In the Lord’s Prayer, a pattern for prayer that He demonstrated for us, He says,
“And give us this day our daily bread.”

What are we praying for when we repeat those words?

Manna videos.

Where does our daily bread come from? We need daily communion with God.

“Our faith in God is a consequence or a fruit of our experience,” (Elder Christofferson).

“Take one day at a time...do what the day requires...’Give us this day our daily bread’”.

We don’t always need a big miracle, but we do always need daily help. As we walk through this life with the Lord, we can grow in faith, light, love and testimony.

Jesus is the Bread of Life that we need. We need His atonement. He can heal, forgive and cleanse everything.

From reading Chapter 16:

I am just like ancient Israel. Sometimes when things don’t go just perfectly, when I feel discomfort at all, I through out the whole thing. I offend the Spirit, I disregard my blessing, and I murmur.

Moses remind the people that they are murmuring against God. Do I realize that when I criticize those He’s called?

“What are we? your murmurings are not against us, but against the Lord.” (see Moses 16:8)

They were fed manna in the morning and quail in the evening?

How does the Lord feed you and supply for your needs daily?

Do you remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy? How does remembering the Lord everyday, preparing for the Sabbath, and then observing it, bless you life?

Can you keep the Sabbath without preparation? Are you still trying to gather Manna on the Sabbath?

Jesus Christ is my spiritual rock and living water.

He is my rock and salvation. Psalm 62:6–7

Jesus has always been the Rock of Israel 1 Corinthians 10:1–4

Jesus is the Iron Rod, the Word of God 1 Nephi 11:25

He is also the Tree of Life.

From Family section:

How can we help sustain our leaders? How did Aaron and Hur sustain Moses? What did the people do? How is murmuring harmful to our leaders and destructive to us?

What blessings can come to us and to our leaders as we sustain them?

From Reading Chapter 17:

11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

12 But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

Jesus loves us tremendously. We as a people are constantly forgetting and murmuring. Even then he gave them water, and he preserved them in war.

What can we do to gain the Lord’s trust and favor?

Heidi, Stop Murmuring.
