Abishag
cherishes David in his extreme age—Adonijah aspires to be king—Bathsheba and
Nathan advise David of Adonijah’s plotting—David names Solomon as king, and he
is anointed by Zadok—Adonijah’s cause fails.
Vs 5-7 Absalom's brother Adonijah
also thinks he's all it. Unfortunately, Joab followed after and supported
Adonijah.
Vs 8-14 The prophet Nathan
wants to insure that Solomon is the next king, not Adonijah.
Vs 28-31 David receives
counself from Bathsheba and Nathan and acts immediate to pronounce Solomon as
king.
Vs 32-40 Solomon is anointed
king.
Vs 48-53 When Adonijah hears that Solomon is king, he is
afraid for his life because he was an usurper. Solomon set him free at this
time.

David
charges Solomon to keep the commandments and walk in the ways of the Lord—King
David dies and Solomon reigns—Adonijah, Joab, and Shimei are put to death, and
Abiathar is rejected as high priest—The kingdom is established with Solomon.
Vs 1-4 David gives counsel and
instruction to Solomon before he dies.
Solomon end up having all those who were treasonous put to death.

The officers in Solomon’s court are
listed—Solomon reigns in peace and prosperity over a large kingdom—His wisdom
and understanding exceed that of all men.
Vs 29-32 Not only was Solomon wise and smart, he had a
kind heart too.
Vs 34 People traveled to see Solomon and hear his wisdom.

Solomon
solicits and gains Hiram’s help in getting timber to build the temple—The
Israelites hew stones and cut timber for the temple.
Vs 1 Hiram was a friend of
David's, and Solomon continued that friendship.
Vs 3-5 Solomon was the one to
have the temple built during a time of peace.

Solomon
builds the temple—The Lord promises to dwell among the Israelites if they are
obedient—The ornaments of the temple are described.
Vs 11-12 The blessings
extended to us are so great and wonderful if we keep the covenants we make with
the Lord at baptism and in his holy temples.
Vs 38 Was Solomon's temple built in seven years?

Solomon
builds himself a house—Hiram of Tyre makes the two pillars, the molten sea, the
ten bases, the ten lavers, and all the vessels for the temple—The molten sea
(baptismal font) rests on the backs of twelve oxen.
Vs 1 Was more time spent on
Solomon's house than on the Lord's?
Vs 8 Solomon made leagues
with other nations, and he took their daughters to wife. This was not an ideal
spiritual thing to do.

The Lord
again appears to Solomon—The Lord promises great blessings if the Israelites
are obedient and great cursings if they forsake Him—Solomon reigns in splendor,
levies tribute upon the non-Israelites, and builds a navy of ships.
Vs 2-5 The Lord appeared to
Solomon (for a second time). The Lord accepted the Temple Solomon built and
acknowledge that Israel will be blessed according to his petition if they are
faithful.

The queen
of Sheba visits Solomon—His wealth and wisdom exceed that of all the kings of
the earth.
Vs 6-10 The Queen of
Sheba didn't believe the reports she heard of Solomon and his wisdom. After
meeting him, seeing the temple, his court, and his people, she didn't think
they'd given a complete report. She knew Solomon was blessed and gave him more
presents.
Vs 23-25 All the surrounding rulers wanted to meet
Solomon (the rich and wise) and give him gifts. Do we think to bless those who
are already favored, or are we jealous?
