The
Gibeonites by craft obtain a league with Israel—Joshua makes them servants to
the congregation of Israel.
Some of
the inhabitants around Israel dressed up in old attire, brought moldy bread and
old wine, and they convinced Joshua that they were travelers that heard the
fame of the God of Israel and came to abide with them. They entered into a
league or a contract. Because of that, Israel did not slay them, because they’d
promised not to. But they were given menial jobs in the land.

Israel
defeats the Amorites and their allies, and the Lord casts stones from heaven
upon them—The sun and moon stand still—Many kings and cities are destroyed—The
Lord fought for Israel.
Vs 8 The
people in Gibeon petitioned Joshua for help, because all the surrounding
nations came upon them to destroy them. God promised Joshua that He'd help him
and that He shouldn't be afraid.
Vs 11-14 The
Lord will fight our battles.

Joshua
and Israel conquer the whole land, destroying many cities and nations.
Vs 6 It
doesn't matter how many people and nations are combined against us if we are a
nation that worships and serves the God of Israel.
Vs 23: Israel
was given the land as the Lord promised. I do not understand all the death and
slaughter to obtain it. But God knows His purposes.

Two kings
on the east of the Jordan and thirty-one on the west are conquered by Israel.

There
remain some lands yet to be possessed—Some inhabitants are not expelled—The
inheritances of Reuben, Gad, and one half of Manasseh are confirmed.
God wanted
Joshua to divide all the land before his death. Levi’s inheritance was the God
of Israel, the Priesthood they received, and the sacrifices.

The land
is divided by lot among 9½ tribes—Caleb inherits Hebron as a special reward for
his faithfulness.
Chapter
14:7-11, 14: Caleb was blessed for the
good report he gave when he was 40; 45 years have passed; he's 85 here. And he
says his strength is the same as when he was 40. Receives a good inheritance.

Judah is
given an inheritance in Canaan—The Jebusites dwell with Judah at Jerusalem.

The children
of Joseph (Ephraim and Manasseh) receive their inheritances—Some Canaanites
continue to dwell among the Ephraimites.

Chapter
17: Manasseh and Ephraim both receive an additional
inheritance—Ephraim is to drive out the Canaanites from the hill country. Birthright sons receive a double
portion

The tabernacle of the congregation is set up at
Shiloh—Benjamin receives an inheritance by lot.
Vs 5 Roots of the Southern and the Northern
Kingdoms.
Vs 7 Did the Levites dwell
among all the tribes?
Joshua sent surveyors from
the tribes to give reports, so that Joshua could go before the Lord it cast
lots, and then they marked borders.

Simeon,
Zebulun, Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan receive their inheritances by lot.

Six cities of refuge are appointed for those
guilty of manslaughter.

The Levites receive forty-eight cities with their
suburbs—The Lord fulfills all His promises and gives Israel rest.

The 2½
tribes are dismissed with a blessing—They build an altar of testimony by the
Jordan to show they are the Lord’s people—It is not an altar for sacrifices or
burnt offerings.
Vs
34 And the
children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar Ed: for
it shall be a witness between us that the Lord is God.
