Come Follow Me: Thoughts to Keep in Mind: Reading the Old Testament
“The Old Testament is one of the oldest collections of writings in the world.”
We
can learn from the experiences of the people in the Old Testament,
even though they lived in a different time and culture. We can also
add layers to our testimony as the Spirit teaches us true doctrine.
The Old Testament is full of prophesies and witnesses about
Jesus being the Only Begotten of the Father and the Savior of the
world.
All scripture
is meant to teach about Heavenly Father’s Plan of happiness and the
Doctrine of Christ, so that we know how to live here on earth and so
that we, through the atonement of Jesus Christ, will be able to
return to our Heavenly Parents. Genealogies are often shown. But the
purpose of the scriptures is not to give a full historical account.
God preserved the Old Testament so that we would have a greater understanding of His love for all people and a more comprehensive understanding of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is very valuable. I’m happy to have it. I am glad that it was a course of study one of the years that I taught Seminary, and I’m happy that it is this year too. I am glad that my first reading was in my youth. I do not fear reading the Old Testament. I’m thankful for this opportunity.
Remember, “a book of scripture need not be free from human error in order to be the word of God.”
