Come Follow Me 49

Come Follow Me Lesson 49

Introduction:

How does the Lord feel about pride and wickedness? What other maladies plague societies and nations today? How can you guard against the tide of evil surrounding you?

How do these prophets both proclaim destruction and deliverance? How important is it to you to be delivered from pride, arrogance, greed, hypocrisy, and other evils of our day? What can you do to stay safe?

Look for the invitations to “Come unto Christ”, to seek righteousness and meekness.

Zephaniah 2:3 Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord’s anger.

Habakkuk 3:6 “His ways are everlasting.”

Personal Study: The Lord is both powerful and merciful.

Nahum

Nahum speaks of God’s wrath and matchless power, and also of His mercy and goodness.

While God is good Nahum 1:7, He will also execute wrath upon His enemies Nahum 1:2. (Alma explained this more to his son Corianton, in Alma 42)

It is important to remember that our Father is a God with bodies, parts, and passions. He has perfect control over all His attributes, and we are seeking to learn how to bridle our own passions.

“The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble” (Nahum 1:7).

Family Study: Nahum 1:7.

Do we live in a day of trouble?
Do we hold fast to the Iron Rod, to the Word of God, to Jesus Christ?
Does He have a strong hold on us to protect us in today’s world? His hand is stretched out still.

Nahum speaks of the burning of the earth at the Second Coming and of the mercy and power of the Lord.

Vs 3 Though God is slow to anger, He does have all power, and He cannot clear the unrepentant wicked.

Vs 7 Put your trust in the Lord. He will be your strength, protection, and refuge.

Vs 13 Covenant Israel will be blessed and delivered by the Lord.

Vs 15 As the Lord is the Publisher of Peace, be that too. If you are sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ you will offer protection to others and receive it yourself.

Nineveh will be destroyed, which is a symbol of what will be in the latter days.

Evil will be done away.

https://abn.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/nahum/3?lang=eng

The miserable downfall of Nineveh is foretold.

Habakkuk

Morm. 4:5 It is by the wicked that the wicked are punished.

Personal Study: I can trust the Lord’s will and His timing.

Habakkuk 1:1–4 What were Habakkuk’s concerns?

Habakkuk 1:5–11 The Lord told Habakkuk that that the Chaldeans would punish Judah.

verses 12–17 Was it just for a wicked nation to punish another nation not quite as wicked?

Habakkuk 2:1–4 Do you trust the Lord when you have unanswered questions?

Chapter 3 A prayer of praise and an expression of faith to and in God.

Hebrews 10:32–3911 Cast not away your confidence. Be patient. Exercise faith. Wait on the Lord.

Doctrine and Covenants 121:1–6 When we pray to God to understand our sufferings and His timing, we need to remember this life is short. If we are faithful, we will be exalted with God.

Waiting upon the Lord: Thy Will Be Done

Family: Habakkuk 2:14

For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

What will you do to help bring about the fulfillment of this prophecy?

Habakkuk 3:17–19.

Will you rejoice in the Lord during good times and during times of trouble?

https://abn.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/hab/1?lang=eng

When Habakkuk learns that the Lord will raise up the Chaldeans to overrun the land of Israel, he is troubled that the wicked can be thus employed.

Vs 12-13 God is unchangeable and rightous forever. We need to trust in His goodness and his rebuke and judgment.

https://abn.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/hab/2?lang=eng

The Lord admonishes patience and promises that the just will live by faith—The earth will be filled with knowledge about God—Idols have no power.

Vs 4 Be humble and faithful.

Vs 12 Unrighteous government is an abomination.

Vs 14 For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

Vs 18-19 Never trust in idols and false Gods. They are so insecure.

Vs 20 But the Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

https://abn.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/hab/3?lang=eng

In his prayer Habakkuk trembles at the majesty of God.

Vs 17-19 Even when there is sorrow instead of joy, or cursing instead of blessing, I will rejoice in the Lord God of my salvation. I wlil sing to Him.

Zephaniah

“The Lord hides.” Universal judgment and universal salvation.

I think that “The Day of the Lord” is more than just His outpourings of wrath on all created things. I think it is also a day of deliverance for the righteous.

Personal Study: “Seek ye the Lord, all ye meek of the earth.”

Judah was to be destroyed; but a remnant would be preserved.

What kind of attitudes and behaviors led Judah to destruction?

What are the characteristics of the people God would preserve?

How is are these messages for you?

Family: Zephaniah 2:3.

See ye the Lord! What does it mean to seek righteousness and meekness?

3:14–20 “sing, … be glad and rejoice with all the heart”?

https://abn.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/zeph/1?lang=eng

The destruction of Judah is symbolic of the Second Coming—It is the day of the Lord’s sacrifice, a day of wrath and trouble.

Vs 7-8 ff The Lord will return and the meek and the righteous shall inherit the earth.

https://abn.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/zeph/2?lang=eng

Seek righteousness; seek meekness—Judgment will come upon the Philistines, the Moabites, the children of Ammon, the Ethiopians, and the Assyrians.

Vs 1-3 Seek the Lord now and assist in the gathering. Help the world prepare for the 2nd Coming of Jesus Christ.

Vs 10-11, 15 The prideful against the Lord and against His people will be humbled, and their gods will be naught.

https://abn.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/zeph/3?lang=eng

At the Second Coming, all nations will assemble to battle—Men will have a pure language—The Lord will reign in their midst.

Vs 1-7 The Lord issues warnings and wants to deliver His people.

Vs 8-9 Those who wait upon the Lord will be gathered. They will be the Lord's people and have a pure language. They will all call upon the name of the Lord, and serve Him with one consent. King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Zephaniah 3:14–20 describes Joy of righteous after the Lord casts out our enemies.

Vs 13-20 Great blessings will come to those who remain and are gathered and serve the Lord. He will be with us.

What blessings stand out to you? Compare with
3 Nephi 17.

How does Jesus feel about His people? How does He feel about you?
