Come Follow Me 48
Introduction:
Have you ever tried to run from the Lord? Do you think that He will forget about you because you are trying to forget about Him? Have you ever ignored the Spirit and run a different direction from where God was calling you to go? Jonah did that too. But….
“But the Lord hadn’t
given up on Jonah—just as He hadn’t given up on the people of Nineveh and just
as He doesn’t give up on any of us.”
Micah 7:18–19 God delights in mercy and stands ready with open arms to receives us, when we are searching for Him. He is so compassionate to us.
Personal Study: The Lord is merciful to all who turn to Him.
The Lord is so merciful when we repent.
When have you felt the Lord’s mercy in your own life?
How has the Lord’s mercy to you helped you desire to be merciful to others?
Jonah 4:1 Why was Jonah displeased and angry when the Lord had mercy on Nineveh? What understanding did Jonah lack at that time? Have you had similar trials?
Micah 7:18–19 How could the lesson taught in these verses have helped Jonah? How can they help you?
Luke 15:11–32 What can we learn from the lessons in the prodigal son?
Personal Study: All of God’s children need to hear the
gospel.
Jonah judged the people of Nineveh as enemies and not ready to hear the gospel. I think he would rather have seen them punished or destroyed rather than repentant.
President
Dallin H. Oaks taught: “We should never set ourselves up as judges of who
is ready and who is not. The Lord knows the hearts of all of His children, and
if we pray for inspiration, He will help us find persons He knows to be ‘in a
preparation to hear the word’. Alma 32:6
Mosiah 28:1–5
How is this a better attitude to have?
Alma 17:23–25
3 Nephi 18:32 Why is it important for us to be a welcoming people?
Personal Study: Jonah 1–4
Video: Jonah the Prophet
We should be sad when people don’t repent; and we should be happy when they do. We want them to receive blessings, just like we want to receive blessings.

Jonah
prays to the Lord, and the fish vomits him out on dry ground.
In the belly of the great fish, Jonah remembered his God and repented. He had faith that he'd again worship in the holy temple. He prayed unto God and was released from the fish onto dry ground.

Jonah prophesies the downfall of Nineveh—The people repent, and the city is saved.
What inspires you in this chapter to want to share the gospel, even with those who may not seem ready?
The king of Nineveh and all his people, and even the animals, prayed and fasted in sackcloth and ashes and received forgiveness from the God of heaven.

Jonah is
displeased with the Lord for His mercy upon the people—The Lord rebukes him.
The Lord loved the people of Nineveh, just like He loves the people all
around us today. He wants everyone to have the chance to learn of Him and
repent.

Micah
prophesies the downfall of Samaria and Jerusalem.

Priests who teach for hire and prophets who divine for money bring a
curse upon the people.
Vs 8 True prophets teach the truth. False prophets look for praise and financial gain.
Personal Study: Jesus Christ quoted the writings of Micah.
The Lord compared the
latter-day gathering to a wheat harvest
Micah 4:11–13 I will consecrate their
gain unto the Lord, and their
substance unto the Lord of the whole earth.
3 Nephi 20:18–20
Alma 26:5–7
They are in the hands of the Lord of the harvest, and they are his; and he
will raise them up at the last day.

have power and be like a lion. The Lord will cut out the evil all around.

these last days. All around there will be betrayal. Don’t forsake the Lord.
Matthew 10:35–36
Foes in the same household. Never turn someone away from God. In doing so, you
will become his foe and also a foe to God. This is happening in this day.

shall rule my people Israel.
How did Micah’s prophecy help the Wise Men find Jesus?

Prophets have always testified of Jesus Christ, and they always will.
Micah also foretold the coming of Jesus in Micah 5:2; and the account is then
recorded in Matthew 2:1-6
The story is told so beautifully in this video. Merry Christmas! "Christ
the Savior was born. Christ the Savior was born!"

In the last days, the temple will be built, Israel will gather to it, the millennial era will commence, and the Lord will reign in Zion.
Micah 4:1–5
According to these verses, what will bring peace
and prosperity to the Lord’s people? What can we do to help fulfill this
prophecy in our home?
Vs 1-2 In many ways this scripture could refer to the Salt Lake
Temple. It is located at the cross-roads of the west, and all nations have
assembled there; really, both living and dead.
Vs 3 There have been many temples since, which further the
fulfillment of this prophesy. Yet to be built is the temple in the New
Jerusalem. At that great day when the Lord returns, and the world knows peace,
then will this be more completely fulfilled.

The
Messiah will be born in Bethlehem—In the last days, the remnant of Jacob will
triumph gloriously over the Gentiles.
Jacob will subdue all his enemies, both physical and spiritual. Evil will be done away.

In spite
of all His goodness to them, the people have not served the Lord in spirit and
in truth—They must act righteously, love mercy, and walk humbly before Him.
Vs 6-8 We can do no great thing
to redeem ourselves or to come into favor with the Lord. Jesus did that great
thing to save us all, in doing His Father's will and atoning for us. What is
required of us? Be just, be merciful, and walk humbly before God.

Though
the people of Israel have rebelled, yet in the last days the Lord will have
mercy on them—He will have compassion and pardon their iniquities.
His hand has always been Stretched Out Still!
Vs 7-9 We can always trust in the
Lord, and we should. We should wait upon God. He is our Salvation, and He will
hear our cries! The Lord is my Light.
We should willingly bear chastisement from the Lord. His
correction for us is merciful. He seeks to redeem us from darkness into His
righteousness.
vs 18-20 The Lord will remember His covenant to our
Fathers and have compassion and mercy on us.
