Come Follow Me 36
Introduction:
“Incline
thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding” (Proverbs 2:2).
Proverbs is a book of sayings that, if followed, can lead to wisdom.
Ecclesiastes is a bit more pessimistic. Things in this life are not always if
you do a, then you will get b. But no matter the challenges in life, we are
always better off if we practice faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Personal Study: “Incline thine ear unto wisdom.”
Pay attention to words like wisdom, knowledge, understanding. They are
throughout proverbs. How do these things bless our lives?
Proverbs 2:6 Why is it important to seek the wisdom that the Lord offers? (To be learned is good, if we hearken to the counsels of God.)
Proverbs 16:21 How does truth make us wise in heart? How does it reflect upon our senses?
Matthew 7:24–27 The wise man builds His house upon the Rock. 25:1–13 The 5 wise and 5 foolish virgins.
What is the “fear of the
Lord”?
Proverbs 1:7; The fear of the Lord is the
beginning of knowledge: but fools
despise wisdom and instruction.
16:6 By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.
31:30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
Ecclesiastes 12:13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
Elder David A.
Bednar explained: “Unlike worldly fear that creates alarm and anxiety, godly
fear is a source of peace, assurance, and confidence. … [It] encompasses a deep
feeling of reverence, respect, and awe for the Lord Jesus Christ; obedience to
His commandments; and anticipation of the Final Judgment and justice at His
hand. … Godly fear is loving and trusting in Him.”
It might help to
substitute the word fear with words
like reverence, love, or obedience. RESPECT.
Hebrews 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom
which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably
with reverence and godly fear.
Family Section: Proverbs 3:5–7
