Come Follow Me 32
Introduction:
Bad things happen to good people. Doctrine and Covenants 121:10
Personal Study: My trust in Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ
can help me remain faithful in all circumstances.
What are my reasons for remaining faithful to God?
Do you trust God, even when things do not go your way? Even when you suffer
great loss?
Job 1:21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

Job, a
just and perfect man, is blessed with great riches—Satan obtains permission
from the Lord to tempt and try Job—Job’s property and children are destroyed,
and yet he praises and blesses the Lord.
Even after Job lost all his earthly possession and his sons and
daughters, he worshiped and blessed the Lord. Job 1:21 And said, Naked came I
out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and
the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

Satan
obtains permission from the Lord to afflict Job physically—Job is smitten with boils—Eliphaz,
Bildad, and Zophar come to comfort him.
Even after Job’s health was taken and he had painful boils, he still
trusted God’s goodness. His wife hated seen him in this condition.
9 ¶ Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou
still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.
10 But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women
speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall
we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.
Job’s friends came to mourn with him. They held their peace and were just there to give support.

Job
curses the circumstances of his birth—He asks, Why died I not from the womb?
Great mourning and disquiet. He doesn’t understand why this is
happening to him.

(Immanuel: He is with Us)
Job 14:14:
If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I
wait, till my change come.
Do you use your words to strengthen others who are grieving?

Job says,
The souls of all things are in the hands of the Lord, with the ancient is
wisdom, and the Lord governs in all things.
Very beautiful chapter. Job gets it. He knows the Lord and has
understanding. He accepts His wisdom and His will, even though it is hard to
pass through such difficulties; he knows God has control of all things.
Vs 16: This reminds me of D&C 50, where the Lord tells us that the deceivers will be destroyed and those who are His, which have been deceived, shall be reclaimed.
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/job/13?lang=eng
Job
testifies of his confidence in the Lord and says, Though He slay me, yet will I
trust in Him, and He also will be my salvation.
Vs 15-16 (and prior): Job knows that he is sanctified before God. He has reminded his friends that judgment is the Lord's and not theirs. He knows his heart has been right and he has been valiant. He is ready to accept what the Lord gives him.

Job
testifies of the shortness of life, the certainty of death, and the guarantee
of a resurrection—He asks, If a man die, will he live again?—Job answers that
he will await the Lord’s call to come forth from the grave.
Vs 5: Our days on earth have
been pre-determined by the Lord. If we live righteously, and not carelessly, we
will see the days allotted to us.
Vs 7: We have the glorious hope of the resurrection.
Those who are cut down while in their youth, will again rise in the resurrection
and continue their growth.
Vs 14: Job asks if he will live again after he dies.
Many people ask that. Through the power of the atonement and resurrection, we
will all live again.
Personal Study: Jesus Christ is my Redeemer.
Ponder how Job felt as recorded in Job 19. How do you know
that Jesus Christ is your Redeemer.
He came to me personally after Robby died, to comfort me.
How does it help you to know that Jesus lives? Sing “I Know that my Redeemer Lives.”
Thou are not yet as Job: Doctrine and
Covenants 121:1–12; 122. What a glorious promise is found in 122 for
those who hold out faithful.

Job tells
of the ills that have befallen him and then testifies, I know that my Redeemer
lives—Job prophesies that he will be resurrected and that in his flesh he will
see God.
How has your own testimony been strengthened because of your trials?
Vs 15: It is so heart-breaking
when family and close friends don't know your heart and judge you wrongfully.
Vs 23-27: Job's words are
recorded. We have them. He knew His Savior lives and that He would lift Him up
at the last day; that he would be resurrection with flesh and bone and be with
God.
Personal Study: “When he hath tried me, I shall come forth as
gold.”
God makes his sun shine and his rain fall upon the wicked and the righteous. We have agency, and in order for us to choose right, we have to develop trust in God in all times and seasons. We should never judge those who are going through trials as though they are wicked. Don’t kick someone in the teeth who is already down.
Opposition in all things: 2 Nephi 2:11–13
The Lord tries our patience: Mosiah 23:21–23
Bearing our infirmities with prayer and patience makes us true witnesses for
Him: Mosiah 23:21–23
If we keep our second estate, we will have glory forever: Abraham 3:22–26
Family: Job 23:10: 10 But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

Job
admits that the wicked sometimes prosper in this life—Then he testifies that
their judgment will be hereafter in the day of wrath and destruction.
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/job/22?lang=eng
Eliphaz
accuses Job of various sins and exhorts him to repent.
Job's friends are so certain that he's done evil, because of the many trials that have come to him. They exhort him to repent so that he might be blessed again. DO NOT be guilty of that.
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/job/23?lang=eng
Job seeks
the Lord and asserts his own righteousness—He says, When the Lord has tried me,
I will come forth as gold.
Vs 5-7 Job knows that the Lord
knows he has not done evil.
Vs 10-12 Job has been true to the Lord, and he knows
that once he's passed through the refiner's fire, he'll come out of it as pure
gold.

Murderers,
adulterers, those who oppress the poor, and wicked people in general often go
unpunished for a little while.
Personal Study: God’s perspective is greater than mine.
Elder Neal A.
Maxwell observed that “when we are unduly impatient with an omniscient God’s
timing,” as Job seemed to be, “we really are suggesting that we know what is
best. Strange, isn’t it—we who wear wristwatches seek to counsel Him who
oversees cosmic clocks and calendars.”
Elder Maxwell
certainly went through his own trials, and he also gained understanding.
I believe Job got it. I think he was defending himself against his friends’
accusations.
What important truths
was the Lord teaching Job in the following chapters?
How can these insights help you in your own struggles?
Job 42:1–6
What might Job still have had need to repent of?
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/job/38?lang=eng
God asks
Job where he was when the foundations of the earth were laid, when the morning
stars sang together, and when all the sons of God shouted for joy—The phenomena
of nature show the greatness of God and the weakness of man.
God puts the strive to rest. Neither Job nor His friends possess the greater understanding. Their wisdom is small. God has all understanding and comprehension. We need to trust in His judgment.
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/job/39?lang=eng
Man’s
weakness and ignorance are compared with God’s mighty works—Does man even know
how the laws of nature operate?
The Creator has all understanding of His creations.
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/job/40?lang=eng
The Lord
challenges Job, and Job replies humbly—The Lord speaks of His power to Job—He
asks, Hast thou an arm like God?—He points to His power in the behemoth.
https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/ot/job/42?lang=eng
Job
repents in dust and ashes—He sees the Lord with his eyes—The Lord chastises
Job’s friends, accepts Job, blesses him, and makes his latter days greater than
his beginning.
Job received the sweetest blessings from the Lord. He saw the Lord. His friends were chastised. He learned wisdom and more trust and repented. He was blessed beyond measure.
