Judah, Simeon, and Joseph continue to conquer the Canaanites—Remnants of the Canaanites remain in the lands of Judah, Manasseh, Ephraim, Zebulun, Asher, Naphtali, and Dan.

Deborah and Barak sing a song of praise because Israel is delivered from Canaanite bondage.

Vs. 7: Though Deborah was a judge of all the people of Israel, she knew that her calling and title as a mother was more important.

Gideon’s son Abimelech is made king—He slays his seventy brothers—Jotham tells a fable of trees choosing a king—The Shechemites conspire against Abimelech—He is slain at Thebez.

vs 8-15 The trees and the bramble bush. Abimelech dealt treacherously, and he became as a burned bramble bush.

Tola and then Jair judge Israel—The children of Israel worship false gods, are forsaken by the Lord, and are distressed by their enemies—They repent and ask the Lord for deliverance.

vs 6-7 Israel forsook the Lord and served false Gods; God sold them into the hands of the Philistines and the children of Ammon.

vs 10-14 Israel wants to be blessed again. The Lord reminds them how many times He’s saved them and they still chose to forsake Him.

Vs 15-16 They acknowledge they’ve sinned and put the false gods away from them and served the Lord. The Lord doesn’t like to see their suffering.

Jephthah is chosen as the captain of the armies of Israel—The Ammonites assail Israel in war—Jephthah is guided by the Spirit and defeats Ammon with a great slaughter—He makes a rash vow, which leads to the sacrifice of his only daughter.

The Gileadites slay 42,000 Ephraimites—Jephthah, Ibzan, Elon, and Abdon each in turn judge Israel.

Micah has a house of gods (images) and consecrates his own priests.

Vs 6 Being without law and without established agreed upon order is not good.

Vs 9-10 Micah paid to have a priest live with him and minister to him.

The Danites send men to seek an inheritance—They take Micah’s images and priest, burn the city of Laish, and set up idolatry.

Vs 18-20 People of Dan's tribe stole Micha's false gods and his false priest so they could practice idolatry.

A Levite’s concubine returns to her father—Her husband takes her back, and they lodge overnight in Gibeah—The men of Gibeah abuse the concubine and she dies—The Levite husband cuts her into twelve pieces and sends them to the tribes of Israel.

Yeah, I’ll speak my mind: This is sick. Why would you turn over anyone, male or female to be sexually assaulted and abused all night? This is so perverse. Why would a husband further desecrate the body of his wife by cutting it into pieces?

All Israel arises against the Benjamites, who refuse to deliver up the men of Gibeah—The Benjamites are smitten and destroyed.

Israel wanted the Benjamites to hand over the rapists that killed the woman. They would not, but prepared for war against Israel. Initially they were beating Israel; but then Israel destroyed them and their cities.

The people lament the desolation of Benjamin—The inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead are destroyed for not engaging in the war with Benjamin—Wives are provided for the remnant of Benjamin.

Vs 2-4: Benjamin was their brother. They were sorrowful about this utter destruction.

Vs 25: They repeated the same folly again. They stole numerous women to wife against their will. I don't get it. This reminds me of the priests of King Noah who stole the Lamanite daughters.

Come Follow Me Lesson 51 “I Have Loved You, Saith the Lord” Introduction: Malachi means My messenger. What messages did the Lord give Malachi have for you? What messages does he have for the world? Do you trust that the Lord loves you even in adversity? You should. “I have loved you,” the Lord told His people through the prophet Malachi.
