Saul
seeks to kill David—Michal saves David by artifice—David joins Samuel and the
company of prophets.
Vs 1-7 Jonathan was true to David
and would not seek his harm, but reminded Saul of David's righteous service.
Vs 11-16 Michal also
warned David and helped him escape.
Vs 18 ff Saul still was seeking to kill David and send messengers, who ended up prophesying, and more the same, and then himself the same. Strange things are happening.

David and
Jonathan make a covenant of friendship and peace—They take leave of each other.
Vs 42 Jonathan kept his covenant to David. He blessed him, even in knowing that he would be Israel's King instead of Jonathan. It was okay. There was no hatred, envy, or regret. He loved David as he loved his own soul.

David
gains followers—He goes from one place to another, fleeing from Saul—Saul slays
the priests who showed kindness to David.
Vs 20-23 Saul was so desperate in his
envy and hate and not willing to accept the Lord's will.
He had 85 priests killed who gave David food and spoke of David's
goodness. Only one priest escaped. David invited him to abide with him.

David
smites the Philistines and saves Keilah—He continues to flee from Saul—Jonathan
comforts him in Ziph.
Vs 1-5 The important thing here is that David inquired of the Lord. He didn't go to battle until he knew it was the Lord's will.
Vs 14 Again, David
looked for direction from the Lord and fled for safety.
Vs 16-18 Jonathan found David and strengthened him in
the Lord.

David
finds Saul in a cave and spares his life—Saul confesses that David is more
righteous than he—David swears that he will not cut off the seed of Saul.
Vs 9-12 David may have
cut Saul's skirt to show that he'd been delivered into his hand, and he could
have killed him. But he wouldn't do it, because Saul was the Lord's anointed.
Vs 13 Remember this
proverb. You do not have to seek revenge: As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but
mine hand shall not be upon thee.
Vs 15 Let the Lord be the judge, and let him decide
how to deal with the evil doer.
Vs 20-22 Saul finally acknowledged that David was a better man that he, and that David was supposed to be the king in Israel. David promised to not cut off Saul's seed. Easy. David loved Jonathan.

dies—Nabal rebuffs David and refuses to give him food—Abigail intercedes, saves
Nabal, and gives David a present—David is pacified, Nabal dies, and David

David
again spares Saul’s life—He again refuses to stretch forth his hand against the
Lord’s anointed—Saul and David separate.
Vs 21-25 Saul cannot be trusted. Again he came up against David. While he was sleeping, David took his spear and his water, but again he would not strike or harm him. Even the Saul again promises he won't seek David's hurt, he has proven he's untrustworthy.

David

Saul
inquires of the witch of Endor for revelation—She foretells his death, the
death of his sons, and the defeat of Israel by the Philistines.
Even though Saul had gotten rid of sorcery an witchcraft, he then sought it out. Could this woman really call back Samuel from the dead? Not too sure about this chapter.

The
Amalekites spoil Ziklag and the borders of Judah—David smites Amalek and
regains and divides the spoil.
Vs 3-8 In David's great sorrow, he still turned to the
Lord and asked if he should go up to battle, before he did so of his own
accord.
Vs 18-19 This is truly one of David's
great victories. He had his two wives and children restored to him. Earlier
Saul had promised a daughter to wife and then given her to someone else. Then
he gave David one of his daughters to wife, and then still gave her to someone
else.
I'm so sad for David. I wish he hadn't fallen when he did with the
wife of Uriah.

The
Philistines defeat Israel—Saul and his three sons are slain—Their bodies are
retrieved by the Gileadites and burned.
