Come Follow Me 6: Genesis 6-11; Moses 8
Come Follow Me Lesson 6: Genesis 6-11; Moses 8
Introduction:
How are conditions in our world today similar to conditions in
Noah’s day?
How are they similar to the time of the
great tower of Babylon?
Are people trying to build their own ways to heaven, while at the same time claiming there is no God?
How can my faith and actions bless my family and friends the same way Noah’s and the Brother of Jared’s did?
How can my faith, prayer, and covenants help save people from floods and from confusion?
Personal Study
Why is it so important for us to follow the prophets, especially the current prophet?
Noah was chosen to reestablish God’s children on the earth after the Flood.
Keys were given to both Adam and Noah. Enoch’s righteous city returned to God.
People of Noah’s time did not want to listen to him. Here’s what Joseph Smith said of them:
But they could not endure the new revelation: the old we believe because our fathers did, but away with new revelations. And the flood swept them away.
Do we floods sweeping away brothers and sisters who will not accept new revelations?
Readings: Moses 8:
vs 2 Methusaleh remained on the earth to fulfill the Lord’s covenants. Noah came through his line.
Vs 12 Japheth and Shem had the same mother; what about Ham?
Vs 13 Noah and his sons were obedient to God. Vs 27 They all walked with God. Do I?
Vs 17 Did men start to live shorter lives after Noah (before the
flood or after; 120 years)
Warning: Lord’s Spirit will not
always strive with men; if we don’t repent we will be overtaken
by
the flood. (Physically water in Noah’s day; wickedness and
destruction in ours)
vs 18 Noah was protected from the giants of his day. How can I be protected from the giants of my
day?
Vs 19 Noah was given Melchizedek priesthood and called to preach the gospel (same with Enoch)
vs 23-24
Most taught the gospel of Faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism and receiving the Gift of
the Holy Ghost. (The everlasting gospel) The people rejected him. They believed that they had
safety in following the ways of the world. “Follow the Science.” So sad.
Vs 30 God determined to destroy all flesh from the earth (except 8 souls)
How can following the prophet today keep you safe in today’s world? What are His current teachings that have and will keep you safe?
If we put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ and follow His prophets, the heavens will shake for our good and for His name’s glory.
Personal section
2:
The JST gives us
great insight to the covenant the Lord made when he gave the promise
not to flood the earth again and set the rainbow in the sky.
Are
we looking heavenward? Enoch’s City is looking towards us. Joseph
Smith Translation, Genesis 9:21–25
Won’t it be
grand when heaven and earth meet?
How to Reach Heaven Section:
Babylon is the world
that is in opposition to the covenants and principles of the gospel
of Jesus Christ. We are invited to flee Babylon and come to Zion.
There is protection in the stakes of Zion.
Revelation
18:1-10; See vs 8: All her plagues shall come in one day. I believe
that day began two years ago and will continue. I will stay committed
to building Zion. (Also D&C 133:14)
People think today
that they can get ahead by adopting worldly practices and “following
the science”. Safety and deliverance and the road to freedom and
salvation is and has always been found in Jesus Christ, the only name
by which we are redeemed.
None of us can build any tower
high enough to reach the heights that can be given to us as a free
gift for being obedient to our Father through faith on His Son Jesus
Christ. If we try to rebuild the tower of Babylon, destruction awaits
us (see Helaman6:28) If we uphold secret combinations, the devil will
gain power over us. (see vs 26-27).
Psalm 127:1 Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
What can we do Now Today to make sure that our language and communication with the Lord is not confounded? We need that protection and guidance just like Jared and his family did. (See Ether 1:33-34). What can we do for our family and friends to make sure their path is not confounded?
Who do we need to hearken to in order to find safety and protection?
Family Study
How can we liken the safety that Noah’s family found in the ark to
our safety in following the prophet? How can we liken the safety of
the boat to the safety found in the temples? Keep covenants. Let God
Prevail.
Are there other protections the Lord has given
us in these days like the ark in Noah’s day?
Redemption
through Jesus Christ. 2 Nephi 9: 7-13.
Stakes of Zion: D&C
115:5-6
Moses 8: 17 The Lord’s Spirit will not always strive with man. (1
Nephi 7:14; D&C 1:33)
Our Heavenly Father and Jesus do
all things for us and give us all chances to come unto them and
return home to them. But, agency is an eternal principle and gifts
from our Father. So when men entirely forsake and choose evil over
righteousness and deny God and His Spirit, He needs to allow them
their agency.
Readings: Genesis 6-8:
Genesis 6:12 Make sure that you are not corrupting the way of
the Lord.
Vs 18: Has the Lord established His covenant with you as He did with Moses? Are you holding to the rod and staying on the covenant path?
Genesis 7:1 Will God invite you into His home in heaven because you have been righteous?
Vs 2 Were there more clean beasts taken so sacrifices could be made?
Vs 13 Were Noah’s grandchildren not permitted to come?
Vs 16 The Lord shut them in. Do you want the Lord to surround you with protection, tuck you in safely?
Vs 18 Even though evil is currently prevailing on the earth, if we enter the Lord’s ark, if we keep our covenants, we will rise above the floods.
Vs 24 It doesn’t matter how long that it appears that evil is prevailing. If we let God prevail in our own lives, we will be the leaven that helps others and this world rise above it.
Genesis 8:1 What has the Lord done to blow the floods away from you?
Vs 3. What can we do to help the flood waters of evil to abate?
Vs 11 The dove brought back an olive leaf. How can one new leaf give us hope of eternal life?
Noah and his family had to stay in the ark for a long time, until it
was safe for them to return to the earth and “normal life.”
Look how He has given us time in our own homes with our
nuclear family units. Why are we complaining? Let’s trust Him, grow
in faith, and be ready to go out on more solid ground. We need to
make our spiritual footing more sure. How can we do this?
Vs 20 As things have opened up from this current pandemic and as they will continue to open up, what are we doing to show our gratitude and profess our trust in God. How are we renewing our covenants?
Vs 21 Does the Lord smell a sweet savor from the sacrifices we are
making? Or are we doing things grudgingly or with lots of murmuring?
If we return thanks to God for all things, He will bless
us and not curse us.
Be thankful for the promise of continued life and blessings from Noah’s day to the end or the world. It’s a great promise.
Genesis 9: Remembering covenants.
vs 1 God regave the first commandment, given to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, to Noah and his sons.
Vs 2 He gave them dominion over the earth.
Vs 9 God established His covenant with Noah and his sons.
Vs 11 No flood to cover entire earth again
Vs 2-17 The everlasting gospel, the covenant established. The rainbow is a token of the promise of the covenant. We can only receive the blessings of the covenant through obedience. If we break the covenants, we will be cast out from God’s presence. Faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism, and the Gift of the Holy Ghost will lead us back into His favor and presence and restore again the covenant relationship with our Father.
Vs 18 Ham father of Canaan vs 25 Canaan cursed; Ham saw father’s nakedness vs 26 Canaan to serve Shem
Chapter 10; Genealogy
Chapter 11: Tower of Babel and Genealogy
Vs. 6 Is the Lord perhaps sending plagues because the people are trying to develop a World Order that is not in harmony with His Plan?
