Come Follow Me:Reading : Genesis 34-36

Genesis 34 Dinah’s brothers were angry with Shechem for sleeping with Dinah. But they made promises that they broke and they slaughtered the city of men after they were circumcised and ready to join with Jacob’s family. So sad. Genesis 35 Rachel died in child bearing. 18  And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she  died ) that she called his name  Ben-oni : but his father called him  Benjamin . Reuben slept with Billah. Isaac lived to be 180. 29  And Isaac gave up the ghost, and died, and was  gathered   unto his people,  being   old and full of days: and his sons Esau and Jacob  buried   him. Genesis 36 Esau leaves the land for a place and room for his own people, the Edomites. This chapter contains his genealogy.

Come Follow Me 10: Genesis 28-33

Come Follow Me Lesson 10:Genesis 28-33 Introduction: Since the Lord revealed Himself to Jacob in Genesis 28, Jacob knew that he could receive help from the Lord when it was time to meet Esau again in Genesis 32. How has the Lord blessed you in your own wildernesses? When we seek the Lord, we can find Him wherever we are. Personal Study 28-30: It is interesting that Jacob had his dream of the ladder when he was on His way to find a wife. In a very real way, he received his own endowment, as the covenant was renewed through him. Did Jacob experience the same thing with the ladder that we experience in the temple as we make covenants and progress from one kingdom to another? Why was Jacob’s marriage to Rachel important in light of the covenant? Why is it important for us to marry in the covenant? How has temple attendance brought you closer to the Lord? How was the Lord merciful to Rachel and Leah? How has the Lord been merciful to you? Selection from OT Student Manual: Paul had bee...

Come Follow Me (between 9 and 10): Thoughts to Keep in Mind: the House of Israel

Thoughts to Keep in Mind: The House of Israel Jacob had a right to worry about his reunion with Esau. What can we learn about approaching family members with whom we have strained relationships? Jacob prayed. He wrestled with the Lord. His heart was softened and changed. His name was changed to Israel. Israel=He perseveres with God=Let God Prevail. When we stop worrying about being the one in the right and trust in God, things will work out. God made His covenant with Jacob. See Genesis 32:28 . As a prince, he would have power with God and with man, because he let God prevail in his life. Genesis 32:24–32 ) The name Israel indeed has become great in the world and throughout history, and in eternity. Our lineage is an important part of our covenant identity. Being part of covenant Israel is what is important. Entering the Waters of Judea, or being baptized, puts us on that covenant path. It is still up to the children of Israel to be the leaven and to bless all the children of t...

Come Follow Me 9: Genesis 24-27

Come Follow Me Lesson 9: Genesis 24-27 Introduction: The blessings of the Priesthood and of the Gospel are the blessings of Salvation of of Life Eternal. (See Abraham 2:11) The Lord’s covenant promises are ongoing, from generation to generation. The covenant was renewed with Isaac and Rebekah’s family. (It has also been renewed with ours. We are their descendants and children of the covenant.) Look for their examples of kindness, patience, and trust in the Lord’s promised blessings. These are hallmark attributes of children of the covenant, or of disciples of Jesus Christ. Will you give up you figurative daily pottage to know the Lord? Will you do so in order to secure God’s blessings for both you and your posterity? Personal Study 24: Why was Isaac’s marriage of prime importance to Abraham? Why did he seek a daughter of the covenant? Why does God ordained marriage, between a man and a woman, carry with it the best chance for the success of our Heavenly Father’s...

Come Follow Me 8: Genesis 18-23

Come Follow Me Lesson 8:18-23 Introduction: Our lives carry both happiness and sadness. This life is a testing period (See Abraham 3:25). Will I do all things that Heavenly Father requires of me? Am I doing so now? What can I change to be a greater following after righteousness? Abraham did prove faithful. Abraham trusted God, and God trusted Abraham. Do I believe God’s promises? Do I flee wickedness and never look back, and do I trust God regardless of the required sacrifice? Personal Study (and Family): The Joseph Smith account says that Abraham and Sarah rejoiced, not laughed. I don’t think that their “laughter” was in disbelief or in levity. I think that sometimes with rejoicing, we laugh. The impossible became the possible, and then a reality. Do you trust that things will happen according to the Lord’s will in His own time? Doctrine and Covenants 88:68 . Readings: Chapter 18: Abraham welcomed three holy men and offered them food, rest, and refreshment. Vs 6 He bid...

Come Follow Me 7: Genesis 12-17; Abraham 1-2

Come Follow Me Lesson 7: Genesis 12-17; Abraham 1-2 Earlier Readings: Abraham 1-2: Come Follow Me: Abraham 1-2 https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/scriptures/pgp/abr/1?lang=eng Abraham 1 Why was it important to Heavenly Father that the Church obtain the records from Abraham? What greater happiness, rest, and peace does our Father desire for all of us? (See vs 2) Do we hold the rights belonging to the fathers? When we covenant to do the Lord’s will and forsake the gods fashioned by the world, we have Jehovah’s promise, just as Abraham did in vs 18: “Behold, I will lead thee by my hand, and I will take thee, to put upon thee my name, even the Priesthood of thy father, and my power shall be over thee.” Then this, “through thy ministry my name shall be known in the earth forever, for I am thy God,” in vs 19. It is through Abraham’s seed that the gospel is being taken to all the world and that all the world will be blessed. Abraham Chapter 1 talks about Ham marrying outside the ...

Come Follow Me: Between 6-7: Thoughts to Keep in Mind

Come Follow Me: Thoughts to Keep in Mind: The Covenant The Covenant People: What covenants have you made with God? What covenants have you made with other people? What is the difference between a covenant, a contract, and an oath? “When God spoke to Noah, Abraham, or Moses about covenants, He was inviting them to enter into a relationship of trust with Him.” “the Old Testament is fundamentally the story of people who saw themselves as the inheritors of this covenant—the covenant people.” How do we receive or enter into this covenant and relationship with God? (Galatians 3: 27-29) What are the blessings of the Abrahamic Covenant? How have you been blessed by receiving and entering into this covenant? What promises are yours through faith in Jesus Christ? Do I want to be a greater follower of Righteousness? (See Abraham 1:2) He sought the blessings of the fathers. How have you been blessed to be introduced to these principles by having parents who wanted to be greater fo...
