Come Follow Me: Abraham 1-2

Abraham 1

Why was it important to Heavenly Father that the Church obtain the records from Abraham?

What greater happiness, rest, and peace does our Father desire for all of us? (See vs 2)

Do we hold the rights belonging to the fathers?

When we covenant to do the Lord’s will and forsake the gods fashioned by the world, we have Jehovah’s promise, just as Abraham did in vs 18:

“Behold, I will lead thee by my hand, and I will take thee, to put upon thee my name, even the Priesthood of thy father, and my power shall be over thee.”

Then this, “through thy ministry my name shall be known in the earth forever, for I am thy God,” in vs 19.

It is through Abraham’s seed that the gospel is being taken to all the world and that all the world will be blessed.

Abraham Chapter 1 talks about Ham marrying outside the covenant, a daughter of Egypt. Afterwards, Pharaoh, who was of their seed, set up his order after the pattern of the Priesthood, but he carried the curse and could not be ordained to the priesthood. He was blessed with the things of the earth and with wisdom, but cursed in not being able to have the Priesthood (vs. 26).

Vs. 27 clearly states that there was a lineage that did not have the right to the Priesthood (in that day).

“Now, Pharaoh being of that lineage by which he could not have the right of Priesthood…”

Abraham clearly received the Priesthood as the right of the firstborn, passed down through the fathers.

There was clearly a race of people who were not permitted to lay claim on the rights of the priesthood at that day.

Abraham 2

All gospel blessings are promised to Abraham’s seed, and through his seed to everyone.

It is apparent here, that everyone, no matter their race would at some time receive all the blessings of the gospel, including rights to the priesthood. (see chapter heading)

The Lord gave a land to Abraham and also to his seed, when the hearken to the Lord’s voice (see vs. 6).

Abrahamic Covenant or rather Jehovah’s covenant with Abraham is found in verses 8-11:

8 My name is Jehovah, and I know the end from the beginning; therefore my hand shall be over thee.

9 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee above measure, and make thy name great among all nations, and thou shalt be a blessing unto thy seed after thee, that in their hands they shall bear this ministry and Priesthood unto all nations;

10 And I will bless them through thy name; for as many as receive this Gospel shall be called after thy name, and shall be accounted thy seed, and shall rise up and bless thee, as their father;

11 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee; and in thee (that is, in thy Priesthood) and in thy seed (that is, thy Priesthood), for I give unto thee a promise that this right shall continue in thee, and in thy seed after thee (that is to say, the literal seed, or the seed of the body) shall all the families of the earth be blessed, even with the blessings of the Gospel, which are the blessings of salvation, even of life eternal.

After this marvelous manifestation, Abraham recognizes, feels, and expresses his gratitude:

12 Now, after the Lord had withdrawn from speaking to me, and withdrawn his face from me, I said in my heart: Thy servant has sought thee earnestly; now I have found thee;

13 Thou didst send thine angel to deliver me from the gods of Elkenah, and I will do well to hearken unto thy voice, therefore let thy servant rise up and depart in peace.

How do we feel when we leave from the temple endowed with that same power which anciently was given to Abraham?

“Eternity was our covering and our rock and our salvation.”

Have we allowed Jesus to be our covering, our rock, and our salvation? Are we letting God prevail in our lives?

The Lord would give Abraham and his seed the land of Canaan (vs. 19).

Even though Abraham prayed that the famine would be taken from his father’s house, the famine continued. As a result Abraham went to Egypt.

What can we learn about accepting God’s will and timing from Abraham’s record?
